Overall Opinion of the book: The writing in this book is incredibly beautiful and flows great. Rebecca Ross is a great writer and it is evident by both this book and Divine Rivals. While I really enjoyed Divine Rivals and its sequel, this book fell flat for me. It was really slow and for such a long book ( over 500 pages) I feel like there wasn't much that happened until halfway through act 2. I did enjoy the ending and how the epilogue tied in the other books perfectly. It would be a great way to segue into Divine Rivals, and it is also fun finding the little easter egg mentions if you read that book first.Setting: The setting is within the Divine realms mentioned in her other books. Skyward and the Underling realms are both a big part of the setting throughout the book. They are beautifully described and she paints a picture of both realms.
Characters: This is one spot the book fell flat for me. I didn't really have any connection to the characters. Matilda, the FMC, was boring to me. To me, she didn't have much of a personality. Vincent, the MMC, was a little better. His story was good and made you feel a little something for him. But in my opinion, a side character stole the book for me. And that was Bade, the god of war. His character seemed to be more complex than both the main characters for me and I don't know if she has a book about him and his love story but I would like to read that one.
Plot: The story itself was good, however the pacing of the story was incredibly slow for me. Pretty much the full act 1 of the book was back story that I don't think was entirely necessary. And while Act 2 did pick up the pace a little, I still feel like it was very long for, what felt like very little happening. Act 3 was better and after about 70% of the way through) did I truly start enjoying the book.
Other books I have read and wrote about:
Of Flames and Fallacies - Courtney Whims
Kingdom of Shadows and Wings (series)
Empire of Flames and Thorns - Marion Blackwood
The read thorough thoughts:
Act 1- slow build to actual story. Back story of main character. Took a while to get into but towards the end picked up a little.
Act 2
Pg 167– did not see that coming at all. But honestly, I have no clue where this story is leading. I’m still deciding if I like that fact or not. There is comfort in knowing what may happen, even if it is only a hunch.
End of act 2:
This part seemed to have more interesting development and a little more pacing, but still a little bit too slow for me. I feel Like people may say this a slow burn on romance, but for me there is no “burn”, it’s just slow development. I will say you can tell the two characters have a connection, but the romance has not developed at all by 65% of the way through the book.
I am not into act 3,and am 65% of the way though the book and still have no idea where this story could be leading.
Act 3 did speed up the pacing a little more with a war and her deal she made with the wastes god. The ending was pretty good with how it wrapped things up for Matilda and Vincent. and I really enjoyed the epilogue where it connected this book to Divine Rivals.
