Crochet Through 2026

 January:

For Christmas, my husband got me a crochet kit (Link here), that has 4 different crochet plants. This one took me two days, the first day I did the pot and the second day I did the cactus. Here is a summary of my experience.

Difficulty: Easy ☑☑▢▢▢

Materials: Crochet hook (3mm), Yarn (white, brown, pink, black and green), safety eyes, a yarn needle, and a stitch marker.

Thoughts: The kit came with all the necessary materials which was really nice and the materials were nice quality. The kit came with an instruction manual, with how to do the different stitches, and specific instructions for each of the 4 projects.

As far as completing the cactus, the instructions were easy to read and follow. The only problem I had with the instructions was that at every start of a round it had a chain, and every end of the round was a slip stitch. I am used to just continuing the round. So, I did that with the pot and ended up with a misshapen pot in the back. So, for the cactus, I ignored the beginning chain and ending slip stitch and it was much easier for me.

Changes I would make: First, I would just start with no slip stitch and beginning chain from the beginning. I also would add a weight to the pot. Because it definitely falls over.

I also crocheted a glaceon this month from the Pokémon crochet book (link here) I unfortunately took it to work and did not get a picture of it but here’s the thoughts on Glaceon.

Difficulty: ☑️☑️☑️

Materials: yarn in frost blue, dark navy, and medium blue, 1.5 mm hook, filling, black embroidery thread, felt in white, medium blue and dark teal.

Thoughts:

Glaceon was slightly difficult after the body and head was finished. The extra pieces like the ears and head pieces were more difficult. The instructions were simple, and it could be user error, but those pieces seems to become odd shaped and not like the pictures. There were  lot of pieces that had to sewed on.

The book is easy to read and follow but I do think it’s misleading on what the Pokémon look like after you are done. Again, it may be me, but every time I have made a project from this book, it never comes out exactly like the book makes it seem.

What I would change:

My biggest thing I would change here is adding some kind of support for the ears, there was no wire or backing and so the ears just fall back. I also hate the felt eyes on these projects. Felt is difficult to cut and the templates in the book are never the right size. I don’t know what alternative there could be but, I would love to have one.

February

I barely made it this month. I finished one crochet project ON the 28th. But I made it! So, my new year's goal is still on track!

I crocheted another project from the same kit as the cactus. This time a succulent in a pot. It came out super cute.

Difficulty: ☑️

Thoughts: This little project was really easy and quick. Which I needed because I waited until the last few days to complete a project for February. Again, the kit instructions are easy to follow and all materials are provided. I did not put the slip stitch at the end of every round this time and I feel like it went much smoother.

Things I would change: the booklet didn’t really give instructions on how to sew on the petals of the succulent onto the pot, so I just winged it. However, if you lift the petals, you will see a slight mess of stitches. So having more clear directions on how to sew those on would have been good. But overall, a great experience and would highly recommend for anyone who is starting the crochet journey.
